EVENT RELEASE Issue date: January 2, 2006 Lopez Museum lecture on Jan 28: Reading Rizal Ambeth Ocampo, historian and chairman of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, has written about Rizal in his collection of essays, his column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and in Makamisa: The Search for Rizal’s Third Novel. On January 28, Saturday, 2-4 pm, Mr. Ocampo will bring his light touch to the lecture on the National Hero’s reading life at the Lopez Memorial Museum. Fee of P120.00 entitles one to attend the lecture and see the exhibitions. The lecture complements the exhibition Sojourns which is ongoing at the Lopez Memorial Museum’s Rizaliana gallery. Jose Rizal is one of the best heroes in the Philippines. We even celebrate a day devoted to him personally. Jose is a polyglot. Which means a person who can talk 4 different foreign languages. In Rizal's case, he mastered 22-25 foreign languages. Rizal studied in Ateneo. When he was murdered, the whole Philippines was devastated. Jose never realized that he would be still be killed even though he spent all his life helping our country, but he also realized that he would do this for our own good. Jose Rizal was a courageouse man who chose pen to protect and defend his people and our nation.

The writing's of one of the Philippines most influential people moves me in so many sublte ways. I can almost grasp the hardships, trials and tribulations of that generation,in essence, "our" people go thru the same relative struggles today. I was born in Davao City,Philippines which is located in Mindanao and immigrated to the states when I was 3 years old. I have been away from the "motherland" for 23 years. The US educational system speaks none of filipino history and culture. Thru curiousity, thirst for knowledge and a responsibility to carry on the traditions and history of our people, i continue to educate myself in the history so that one day i may be able to facilitate the knowledge. It would be a shame that one of our greatest hero's and country men would one day be referred to as Dr. Jose Rizal who???

I really admired and recognized Rizal because now i understand why he became a foremost and greatest national hero, bec he only used pen... unlike other country their national hero use some sword and armors during battlefield but Rizal power is really different... Rizal saw things about us and about our country that very very few Filipinos can see, even if it is shown to them (like through Rizal's writings). He saw problems and he saw solutions to those problems. His Dapitan community was a microcosm of what we could do with our Archipelago. But sadly we have not been up to the challenge.
